How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water Fast

Cloudy water is one of the most common pool problems — and usually one of the easiest to fix once you know the cause. Here's how to diagnose and clear it fast.

Common causes of cloudy water

Cloudy water usually comes from one of three things: unbalanced chemistry (especially high pH or low chlorine), poor filtration or circulation, or a buildup of fine particles and contaminants the filter can't catch.

The fast fix

Test and balance your chemistry first — bring chlorine to 1–3 ppm and pH to 7.4–7.6. Then run your filter continuously, clean or backwash it, and consider a clarifier to clump fine particles so the filter can remove them.

PoolHakr can read your test strip and tell you precisely which levels are off and what to add to clear the water without overshooting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pool water cloudy even though chlorine is fine?
Cloudy water with normal chlorine is usually caused by high pH, poor filtration, or fine particles. Check your pH and alkalinity, run the filter longer, and use a clarifier to help remove suspended particles.
How long does it take to clear a cloudy pool?
With balanced chemistry and continuous filtration, most cloudy pools clear within 24 to 48 hours. Severe cases may take a few days of running the filter and cleaning it regularly.
